Immediately after last year’s intermediate exam of Courses 27 and 28, they ventilated their second wig; from January of this year Historical Styling has been a regular part of the lesson plan; in Ethnic Makeup, next up will be Ancient Egyptians, including historic wigs made of artificial-hair. By our third-year students in courses 25 and 26, the curling tongs are glowing. With dedication everything from men’s marcel-wave hairstyles, women’s historical hair, old age makeup (with baldcap), hand-applied beard work and much more is being trained and prepared for the areas of television and film. “Pfft, what a lot of stress…!”
After a successful final exam and with exceptionally good work behind them, the students of course 24 partied on the roof terrace into the night. The weather was kind, the air balmy, and to the rhythm of the music they found a second wind after all the hard work. Amusingly, just as the final song of the night was playing, the police arrived and shared the last moment of revelry.
On 06.07.2011 Andrea Mayr (Maske Berlin) and New York Celebrity-Makeup Artist James Vincent visited us. James told the story of how he got started in the profession, emphasizing the importance of networking. Based on this concept James founded the first professional makeup tradeshow in New York in 2005, and “The Makeup Show” was born, in the following years expanding to Chicago and L.A.. On 17.09.-18.09.2011 The Makeup Show will come to Berlin, the first time in Europe. Those looking for pre-order tickets, can do that on the website of the organizers. We thank Andrea for putting us in contact with James, and furthermore can only recommend the great supplies available for purchase at Maske Berlin where […]
Summer on our doorstep, we throw off our winter furs and get ready for the coming projects. The sunny summer days are full of T.V. and film projects, for example the second installment of “Der Wanderhure” with Alexandra Neldel. On the 12th of June the trucks of the “Carnival of Cultures” roll out in Berlin. This yearly cultural highlight thrives on the participation of everyone, so anyone with interest to get involved can check on the website of the organizers to see if volunteers are needed. The Makeup Artistry school Hasso von Hugo supports the carnival troupe from Columbia, and will offer makeup and hairstyling to around 40 dancers. Wild rhythm and […]

Some may say that summer’s scarcely begun, yet our summer break has come to an end and a new school year is upon us already. Last Monday came the time for 34 new students to embark upon the road of training for the makeup profession. We wish them every success in their education! The Walk of Fashion has just received professional makeup support for the third time. None other than our graduate, Ulrike Reimann, oversaw the Seefestspiele Wannsee’s staging of The Magic Flute as Chief Makeup Artist. Naturally, our students helped with the production, gathering valuable experience. Many interesting projects are raring to go: the WDR would like to film an episode of “W […]
Theaters broaden their schedules, the registers ring at the cabarett und small stage, new Musical-Theaters pop up around Europe and television broadcasts include more and more culture and sport programs. A result of our societies enthusiasm for cultural experience in varying forms is an increased demand for skilled professionals in this area, a demand which will only continue to grow. In order to make visible to the public the immense amount of work put in by the people behind the curtain and show that real artists are often to be found there, the Industrie- und Handelskammer Karlsruhe have offered an award for Germany’s best and most creative trainees in the […]

This March the Meisterschaften für Maskenbildner (Championship for Makeup Artists in training) took place in Düsseldorf for the second year. Our students Corina and Tsengun took the competition at the Artist Design Show by storm, winning the two top places. In total, ten students from around Germany took part in the contest to create an underwater-themed fantasy creature in an hour and a half’s time, applying a fantasy wig and latex prosthetic of their own design. Images of the fabulous finished work can be found on our Facebook site.
Halloween, the trend from America, keeps gaining hold of the German clubscape. Felix, Adagio and the Kulturbrauerei were a few of the venues where costumed revelers gathered on the eery October night. More that 20 of our students were on hand, beautifying guests with ghoulish Halloween makeup for the night. On 31.10.2011 another successful season at the Film Park Babelsberg came to a close, offering the public insight into the various branches of work making up the film industry; with more than 300 000 visitors it was a busy year. We would like to thank Mephisto graduate Ina Charanza for taking great care of our students and for the organization […]
Those keeping up to date with our news will have noticed that our updates have been sparse of late. Unfortunately, we haven’t had the time to to share all of the great things that have been been going on. In the meantime: bebe Young Care Generation visited the school to find out everything about being a makeup artist; students Maria und Tamina took great care of the five roommates, giving them insight into the craft, and with the help of the Komischen Oper Berlin also facilitated a look behind the scenes at the running of an opera house. Furthermore, an episode of WDR’s “W wie Wissen” was filmed at the […]
Every year, a visit from Michael Bouterweck is an absolute highlight for us. Head of the firm Pyrotechnik GmbH, he’s been in the business for over 30 years, overseeing the special effects for Tatort (since 1987) and Polizeiruf (since 1991), among others. Furthermore he’s involved in nearly every production requiring complex special effects, including “Keinohrhase”, “Enemy at the Gates”, Der Clown”, and “Das Wunder von Legende”. During his over 3-hour visit with us, he spoke about his work in film, gave insight into the development and preparation involved in the creation of special effects, and gave a live demonstration; additionally to charred hands and a slit throat a big highlight […]
