Make-up artist. In Germany this career has a name: Hasso von Hugo. He is one of the most well-known and recognized representatives of his industry. No one has moulded and defined this career over the past forty years more than he. Not only successful professionally, he has made a special commitment to pass on his skills and knowledge to the next generation of artists.
Hasso von Hugo
…started his career as a make-up artist at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg in 1968 before moving to the Schiller Theatre in Berlin in 1970. From 1975, he spent many years as a freelance make-up artist for numerous German and international film and TV productions. In 1986 Hasso von Hugo was the first German make-up artist to win the Federal Film Prize. In the same year he was appointed Head Make-up Artist at the National Theatre in Berlin, a position he kept until 1990. In 1987, he was considered the “World’s Best” after winning the British Academy of Film and Television Award (BAFTA) for his work on the film version of Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose.”
Pursuing his desire to offer better support to up-and-coming artists and to set new apprenticeship standards, Hasso von Hugo and his wife Annette founded a comprehensive theoretical and practical apprenticeship for make-up artists in 1990. This was the dawn of the Mephisto Make-up Artists’ School. A committee of respected make-up artists, including Hasso von Hugo, fought for state recognition of the apprenticeship program, an objective they achieved in 2002. As a consultant for the German government, Hasso von Hugo has played a key role in defining and developing the standards for make-up artist training.
Despite his intensive focus on educating young artists, Hasso von Hugo never lost sight of his professional career. He worked time and again as the Head Make-up Artist for international films, as well as the Make-up Supervisor and Special Effects Artist for film, TV and theatre productions. As a result, our students have benefitted from the opportunity to work on large film and TV projects.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
